TWO STARS AND A WISH
I promised myself I would draw for at least half an hour a day but a week has gone by without lifting a pencil. It's interesting what gets in the way. The last time I drew I was frustrated by my efforts at drawing a cone and gave up. I am reminded of the a lecture I once heard given by Carol Dweck on how the self esteem model of working with young people was flawed and should be replaced by a growth mindset - translated into everyday teacher talk as 'Two stars and a wish!'
Much as I have taken that on board in terms of teaching, it only occurred to me this afternoon that it could usefully be applied to my own learning. So, for example, it is about saying when I am unhappy with a drawing, 'OK, these bits of the drawing are good, these bits need improving - this is what I need to learn next.,' instead of 'Wow! That's fantastic! or (more likely) "You are incapable of drawing, you loser!'
So working on that basis - I am pleased with the right eye, but I need not learn to go more slowly, because I took less time on the left eye and it shows. While I was clear on where the light source was at first, I didn't continue to focus on that and it shows. Maybe draw an arrow in the margin to remind me? And I need to take more time, my work deserves it. That approach makes me want to have another go at this drawing, working on the areas where I know I need to grow.
Constructive criticism welcome, by the way. Learning on my own I appreciate knowledgeable feedback.
