Paths, Past and Present
Since we fenced in our yard, we've been trekking from our gate to back door along the remnants of a gravel drive. But today, adapting old street pavers as a border, we started to dig out a new path along that same route. The bricks, dating from 1908, were rescued by my partner Kathy when the city was repaving one of our downtown roads. When she asked the workers what they were going to do with the pavers, they indicated all would go to the city dump, so Kathy loaded wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow with these century-old remnants of our city's history, knowing they could be remade into something new. In the case of our back garden, an old driveway becomes a new path, an old street, a new border.
"If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know
it's not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take. That's
why it's your path." ~ Joseph Campbell
