The Butterfly's Ball..
..and the Grasshopper's Feast
was only a name at the back of my mind when I was taking this, but here's what I found out later, courtesy of Google:
It's a poem by William Roscoe, written in 1802, and telling the story of a party for insects and other small animals.
It also became a 1973 picture book, loosely based on the poem, by illustrator Alan Aldridge and writer William Plomer.
Its next incarnation was as a concept album and live rock opera (1974/5), produced by Roger Glover who had recently left Deep Purple. The album cover design is from Alan Aldridge’s design for the 1973 book.
It begins:
Come take up your Hats, and away let us haste
To the Butterfly's Ball, and the Grasshopper's Feast.
The Trumpeter, Gad-fly, has summon'd the Crew,
And the Revels are now only waiting for you.
So said little Robert, and pacing along,
His merry Companions came forth in a Throng.
And on the smooth Grass, by the side of a Wood,
Beneath a broad Oak that for Ages had stood,
Saw the Children of Earth, and the Tenants of Air,
For an Evening's Amusement together repair.
etc..
Anyway, I had fun doing this today, in and out of some very hard work on the garden and it's my attempt at another Tiny Tuesday. For which I should say, the instruments are made of polished wood with shell inlay. The mandolin is 5 cms high and the flower - in here to give scale - is from a scented geranium (or should that be pelargonium, I never know these days). And thanks to osuzanna for hosting this month..
Hope your day was good xx
