Four of Nine

These are four of the series of cairns known as the Nine Standards, standing in a commanding position over the Eden valley out of Kirkby Stephen. There are many theories about the origin. They appear on 18c maps. They could be county boundaries, or a deterrent to marauding Scots. Today was a grey damp and boggy day. We are now in Keld.
