Smiling in adversity
This is lovely Sally who is being incredibly brave after fracturing her left arm.
I went walking today with the excellent June Zaft of Country Walks. She has a group staying in Haltwhistle and was happy to welcome me along for the day. We were to walk from Greenhead to Haltwhistle, mainly along Hadrian Wall's Trail.
It was a wet morning, although the rain eased after Thirlwall Castle. We had visited Walltown Quarry and made our way to the top of the whin sill for the lovely walk along by Hadrian's Wall. The views north are very good at this point.
Not much farther along, Sally slipped on a wet stone and as she saved herself, her left humerus fractured. Do you remember how I did First Aid training last Thursday? It was all very fresh in my mind as I moved the rest of the walkers away and then dealt with Sally. I managed to fix her arm by turning up the bottom edge of her anorak and tightening it.
Calling the ambulance was the usual problem. They don't take grid references and I had difficulty explaining making them understand exactly which road we were nearest too. Our best plan was to walk to the tiny road below us and then towards Walltown Quarry while the ambulance came. An ambulance car came out and then took Sally and another walker to Newcastle for A & E. I had to be "rescued" from Walltown, although I suppose I could have put on a spurt and caught up with the main group.......
Maureen came for me and filled me with tea and fruit salad while we looked at her new tablet. Then to Julie's for a good catch up and planning for a jaunt to Russia together next year.
Phew!
