A horse, a horse...
The sun shone today! A trip to Durham City for a change and a bit of reminiscing.
The horse on view is the statue of the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1861) in grand hussar uniform. The 3rd marquess owned collieries in the vicinity of Durham but is principally famous as the builder of the Durham coal port of Seaham Harbour which he founded in 1828 as a rival to Sunderland. The Marquess of Londonderry's full name was Charles William Vane Tempest Stewart. The sculptor of Londonderry's statue was Signor Raphael Monti (1818-1881).
Also in the shot is the spire of the city church of St Nicholas dominating the eastern side of the Market Place. It was built in 1858 by J.B.Pritchett a Darlington architect and was described by the Illustrated London News of the time as `the most beautiful specimen of church architcture in the north of England'.
