Birnbeck Pier

Birnbeck Pier, at the far end of Weston-Super-Mare, was built in 1867 and is the only British pier to connect the mainland to an island.

Until the middle of the last century it was a boarding point for passenger steamers and other vessels plying their trade in the Bristol Channel and a popular place to walk for locals and visitors. Like Brean Down it was comissioned in WW2, by the Adimiralty and, although it reopened after the war, it fell into decline and has been closed since 1994.

We took Sophie to Weston today and. strolled along the prom to this vantage point, before meeting up with Kate and Joel on the other pier, the newish a Grand Pier.
