Nature Reserve management

My occasional blips about this volunteering I do, which helps me keep active, continues.

This week we are required to repair fencing which essentially involves identifying rotten fence posts, removing the wire staples using a special tool, removing the old post and then ramming a new one in using this enormously heavy "driver". It takes four people to drive the new post in, often amongst rocks. Another holds the fence out of the way. Today we are a group of six and take it in turns to do the various jobs. Once the post is "in" far enough we do any re-straining of the top wire before re-stapling the fence back to the new posts.

Part of the Wildlife Trust's large herd of Longhorn cattle graze in this field in the Summer, hence the need for good fencing (and for us to watch our step).

We're in the middle of a forest, without traffic noise or other disturbance except a lot of bird song and our own low voices. For me - perfect.

I've discovered some new muscles today so I'll just get this blip done, then go for a soak.
