Sir Anthony Browne
Apologies. Not the most interesting blip photogenically, the lighting was horrendous. Sir Anthony Browne, the first Viscount Montagu K.G. of Cowdray. He died in 1592 aged 65. The title was created on 2 September 1554 especially for him.
He lived through changing times in the reigns of Edward, Mary and Queen Elizabeth I. This monument is in Easebourne Church, his church which saw many religious changes. He survived them all by adapting to what each royal person needed or wanted. And God Bless him, he had the nerve to have a monument made with beneath him in this pose, his TWO wives laid side by sde. Well ok, maybe it was his heirs who did that risky bit of positioning. His second wife was Magdalen Dacre, from Cumberland who I happen to be rather fond of.
All this is relevant to me because I’ve just finished a book about this family and area recommended by Brens, thank you so much it helped me through many tedious hours of hospital, waiting etc.
