60 Scotch Street

Scotch Street, just off the Market Square in Carlisle was, during the 17th and18th centuries, the main thoroughfare for people travelling through the city from England to Scotland. As a result, many of the private houses that had once lined the street became coaching inns. This one, Blue Bell Coaching Inn, was one of the leading inns in Carlisle, according to the plaque above the entrance anyway. I think it must have been rather grand in its time.

In 1916 it became a State Managed Public House. In 1976 it was turned into shops. Apparently at this time the interior was completely gutted, leaving only the front wall of the original. I have never been inside and am not tempted to do so - what is Bright House?
