Home of the Red K6 Telephone Boxes

The Lion Foundry, in Kirkintilloch, churned out thousands of the iconic red K6 phone boxes – designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to coincide with the Jubilee of King George V.

The growth of mobile phones usage resulted in the majority of phone boxes being removed, but there are still around 9,000 red boxes which under a BT scheme can be adopted by communities and they are encouraged to come up with  innovative uses for them.

Some end up in museums.  There is one in the Cavern Club in Liverpool which was almost certainly used by the Beatles. 

Some have been turned into mini coffee kiosks.

A popular innovation has been to install defibrillators in them.


Many have been spotted all over the world!
