BIG DIPPER FIREFLY
(AKA: Lightning Bug) Did you ever try to catch Fireflies in a jar on a hot summer night when you were a kid? I remember running around my grandparents’ yard after dark with a jelly jar and lid, trying to catch these guys. Great success was catching one or two – they were quick!
They have light-producing organs located on their abdominal segments that flash in the dark. Until they take flight, their delicate flight wings are folded under the tougher ‘elytra’ (the black shells on their backs).
I’ve also put a tiny butterfly/skipper/moth in ‘Extras’. Its wingspan barely made ¾ in. (or 2 cm.) It was very hairy – even furry looking. I’d appreciate any help in identifying it.
