Frensham Great Pond

The, now ex, Bristol Student came over last night.  This morning we decided a day out would do us good so we loaded the dogs and went down to Frensham Common.  There are two ponds there, well lakes really, called Great and Little ponds.  Despite only being a mile or so apart and on the same heath, both ponds environments feel very different.

The ponds were created in the middle ages to provide fish for the Bishop of Winchester and his court when visiting the castle in Farnham. Today the sandy shores are a very busy tourist attraction, especially when the schools are on holiday.  This morning the weather was dull and the car parks were strangely empty.  First we had a walk on the heath but the beaches are out of bounds to dogs so we headed off to the Little Pond, which is far more dog friendly and, in my opinion, far more attractive.  As the day warmed up the shores became more populated.  It's a beautiful place with great landscapes and views that change remarkably as you walk around.  Care has been taken to provide plenty of benches to sit on, hides for bird watching and areas are fenced off well to protect the wildlife from the two legged foxes and their four legged pets.  Terns are nesting on man made platforms dotted around the lake. I love to watch them dive for fish. I was amazed at the amount of wildlife present in such a well used recreational area. It's the difference that a few miles further away from London makes.

Daisy had to get back to Reigate so once home I fed the dogs and flopped onto the sofa.  It's been a very busy weekend.  Now to work... again.
