FISH TRAPS

Some of these fish traps (visvywers)  have been in existence for a few thousand years and are a valuable part of Still Bay's historical heritage. The oldest traps were originally built by the Khoisan up to 3000 years ago and are still in use today.
Most of the fish traps are shaped in a half moon and vary in size .
On dark nights the fish do not notice when the tide starts going out and are trapped in the pools and can be caught by hand.
In the past a "vywer" was handed from father to son, who then became responsible for its upkeep.
Each vywer had its own name  "alleroudste" (oldest of all) "Krom knie" (crooked knee) etc
