Here's looking at you kid
Red soldier beetles go head-to-head, playing king of the castle on a sprig of grass. I suspect these were two males squaring up to each other as they don't take long to mate up and these were not for mating.
I swapped this for the silver washed fritillery (now in the string) as Gill really liked it and, well, it is fun.
The nearby car park at Bookham Common was spilling over with disappointed men with cameras. The Purple Emperors didn't show up today so that could be the last chance of one for another year. The females will be emerging now so the males are going to be occupied high in the tree tops. Still, there were others to compensate.
A few extras then from a pleasant morning in the woods. One or two more if you're interested.
