The Basilica of Saint Lawrence
The building is in Asheville, NC and houses a fully functioning Roman Catholic congregation. The architect for the church was Rafael Guastavino, who came the US as part of his work on Vanderbilt's Biltmore House in the mid 1880's. He moved to the area leaving his native Spain. His other US works include Grand Central Station, Carnegie Hall, Grant's Tomb, the Great Hall at Ellis Island and Duke Chapel at Duke University. The dome in the building is said to be the largest free standing elliptical dome in North America. There are no beams of wood or steel in the entire building. The extra shot is from outside the basilica. The free standing dome is 82 feet by 58 feet. I apologize for the delay in posts and limited comments to you. We were in the Asheville area from Sunday until Wednesday spending as much time as possible with our 9 year-old grandson and having a regular 4 month visit to our dermatologist.
