Hollyhocks
Seen by the bus stop on my way home from the hairdresser. A few facts, but maybe some fiction too, about these stately blooms.
1) Hollyhocks were found in a grave of a Neanderthal Man from more than 50,000 years ago.
2) Tudors used the dry root for additions to their wine to stave of blood clots and miscarriages.
3)The Chinese also used it in many of their remedies.
4) If you eat hollyhocks with hazel buds, wild thyme and marigolds, it will enable you to see fairies. (I did wonder about this one ! )
5) A lotion made from them is good for sunburn and dry skin.
6) Children can make dolls out of them using the flower for a skirt, a bud for the head (attach with toothpick) and a smaller flower for a hat.
