Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Under the Red Umbrellas

We both had early morning doctor appointments at the audiology department at Kaiser Medical Center. I started having my hearing checked back in 2000 when I noticed some "white" noise. It was at the end of a school year and I just thought it was stress. When the white noise never ended, I realized it wasn't stress and I was introduced to the term "Tinnitus."

So this morning it was time for my regular check-up to evaluate if I have any hearing loss since the last check-up. The good news is that my hearing is the same. When I scheduled my appointment, I also scheduled one for Mr. Fun -- just because. I figured if I was going for a hearing test, he ought to have to go too. So two different audiologists called us both at the same time to come to separate testing rooms. We we reunited after our "testing," and I learned that Mr. Fun's hearing is just fine, but what they can't help us with is his "selective" hearing. That problem has nothing to do with his eardrums. We also learned that I hear better with my left ear and he hears better with his right ear. We are absolutely opposites in almost everything in life; it's crazy.

After we left the hearing department, Mr. Fun asked if I wanted to stop for breakfast. It didn't take me two seconds to respond with a "Yes!" Then his next question was, "Where?" I mentioned three choices when I nonchalantly suggested "The Mission Inn" never dreaming he'd agree to that.

His immediate response was, "Wow, let's do that!" So we drove further into downtown Riverside, found a parking spot, and soon we were under the red umbrellas enjoying our first "summer celebration breakfast". . . celebrating that I do not report back to the college until late August. Woohoo!

Breakfast was delicious. He ordered the Chorizo and Potato Frittata and I ordered the Margherita Omelette. Because it was a Monday morning, there were few customers and we loved the tranquility mingled with the sounds of dozens of birds in the nearby trees.

The Mission Inn is a favorite place but we go there seldom. We save it for special moments--this morning was one of those moments.

The rest of the day was pretty darn good too.

Good night from Southern California.
