Roses as big as your head
Sunday I went on a tour of some open gardens outside Cape Town with Jane (the gardener and trip planner) and Patrick.
The gardens brought to mind fairies and giants and hidden doorways, but though I kept my eyes out for trolls, I unfortunately did not spot any. At the end of the day, the sheer English-ness of these gardens had me convinced I was no longer in Africa - especially since they were complete with (no kidding) tea and crumpets served upon lacy, wrought iron furniture.
It was a bizarre experience overall, I'd say, but I appreciated it for giving me a glimpse of South African culture that I would likely not otherwise have seen.
Pictured is the very non-native, golf course-quality grass that characterized the experience. The toes are dedicated to Carly.
