A nice surprise.
Knottman is Secretary to a Trust which looks after a delightful area of woodland right near the centre of our village. It has lots of paths and a walled garden and views over the Estuary.
Yesterday evening the Trustees did their annual walk round the woods making a list of maintenance and improvement tasks for the next year.
To our great delight we came across a Martagon Lily in flower in a corner of the wood. This attractive plant, which we have seen many times in the Alps, is also known as Turk's Cap Lily. Martagon is a Turkish word which means turban or cap.
In the wild it is widely found from Portugal right through to Mongolia. Ours is of course a garden escape but it is welcome nevertheless.
