Convoy....
Back to earth with a bump today. Spent most of it working with cattle. First off ,brought the in calf heifers down and did them with pour on along the back to keep the flies off. This is to try and help prevent summer mastitis prior to them calving. If they get mastitis as heifers they can end up with ruined udders and unable to feed their calves ,or even die if really bad.
The forecast was wrong,as it was meant to be a wet start then dry up later. In fact by 2pm it was proper rain.
Spent the afternoon bringing 2 lots of cows and calves down to wean. The cows get shut in one shed and fed straw to get their milk to dry up and their teats to seal up. They stay in for a week, get done for flies and kicked back out ready to start calving next month.
The calves get shut in another shed for about a week or so until the roar is off them, then the heifers go up to reclaimed hill fields, and the bullocks go to a nearer field. They stay there until housing in October.
Needless to say,it is a noisy few days.
