Wilkie Collins...
... was born and spent most of his life in Marylebone.
This portrait is part of a rather lovely tiled mural behind the self-checkouts in Waitrose, Marylebone High Street. It's a bit wasted there as I can't imagine anyone really takes much notice of it!
Wondering whether I can incorporate this in the walk I'm planning for this October's Footprints Literary Festival - 'Walk Wilkie's Way'. Can't quite imagine walking into the shop with a group in tow...
Still got quite a bit of research to do but finding him fascinating. Did a recce of the probable route this afternoon and it started pouring as I was walking down Gloucester Place. Steamy, wet bus from Marble Arch took a good half hour to get down Oxford Street - but it was better than walking in the rain!
