Magnificent Malinche
This was taken as we were sitting in traffic for about 20 mins at the roadworks on our way to "Middle Earth" today. I saw this striking tree on my first day in Costa Rica at the airport, and probably everyday since. And it's no wonder, when I found out what a multi-purpose plant it is! It attracts humming birds and butterflies, looks beautiful, grows well in poor soil, has no serious problems or diseases and does not need watering in the dry season. Medicinal properties include laxative, fever reducer, treat insect bites and fungal or bacterial skin conditions. The seeds produce a red dye and the dried flowers when soaked in water are a natural insect repellent. OK - enough of the botany lesson for today!
See David's blip for pictures of the actual destination - it was another unforgettable experience!
