Whale watching

We met our friends in Kaikoura today and took a trip up the coast to see the seal "nursery". It was a beautiful spot and there were a few cute baby seals and an interesting DOC volunteer to chat to. After that we booked ourselves onto a whale watching tour, each of us trying not to get too excited in case we were disappointed, but doing a really bad job of hiding it.
Our fears were unfounded, the luck was certainly on our side today as our trip was a huge success. We saw seven sperm whales on a trip that averages one or two if you are lucky! This shot is not the best in terms of composition but it was my favourite for other reasons. These two whales are best buddies. They do everything together and it was such a delight to see them rising to the surface together and then witnessing two tails pop up when they decided it was time to head back under. Beautiful creatures.
