June Challenge - A Friend - Friend or Fwend?
Today's image is simply the track list from one of the best selling albums of all time - Tapestry, by Carole King.
When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend
If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door
Carole King's words (from 1971 - yes over 40 years old :( ) sum up what a true friend is, someone who will drop everything, wherever they are, to come running to their friend in need.
There are many different levels of friendship, reflected in the different levels of (often unstated) commitment.
When you look on Facebook and see the number of 'friends' that some people have you know that many of these can be described as aquaintances at best. Do they really have 800, 900 or 1,000 people who would travel across country or even continents if they had hit their darkest hour? That is why I refer to these as 'fwends'.
I know that I have a handful of true friends - those that would stand by me (and have done so) in dark times, I have many more aquaintances with varying depths of friendship, who while not deserting me would not necessarily drop everything if needed.
We all need a small number of true friends, and that means we need to be true friends to a small number of people too.
