The weather in Akureyri was not good, and apparently in the South it was much better, so we decided to head home a day earlier. And we also decided to drive through the middle of Iceland, a route that is only open for a few months during summer each year. M, who has lived here for over 30 years, has never driven it, so it was very interesting. It was shorter in kilometres, but took us 2 hours longer to get home. We stopped at Hveravellir, which has a lot of geothermal activity (and lots of foreign tourists in the hot tub). The picture does not do it justice, it shot out a little stream of hot water every few seconds. I was in short pants and Tshirt (it is supposed to be summer after all), and was freezing, the steam from the different hot areas warmed me up a bit fortunately.
