John Mowlem's Vault, Northbrook Cemetery, Swanage

This atmospheric cemetery is well worth a visit, and is located only a couple of minutes' walk from Swanage Railway Station.

The pyramid houses the burial vault of John Mowlem (1788-1868).  John was the son of a Swanage quarryman.  He gradually built up a thriving business, mainly based on the use of granite to pave the streets in numerous areas of London.  The stone came from Guernsey, and this granite pyramid was erected by "H Bissel, Vale, Guernsey".  Its plinth is in Purbeck stone.

John was partner and uncle of George Burt (1816-1894) who expanded the business into one of the major public works contractors in London.  His wealth enabled him to become a significant benefactor in Swanage.  For instance, Durlston Castle and Country Park, together with the Great Globe were initially gifted (I think) to the town of Swanage and are now owned by Dorset County Council.
