Simply the Best!
The west coast of South Harris is astonishing as you can see here at Luskentyre/ Seilebost. This is a huge bay of fantastically coloured sea with white sand beaches and machair dotted with wild flowers and sun to go with it!
South Harris is almost an island connected to North Harris to a spit of land at Tarbert. North Harris is just the lower, more mountainous part of the Isle of Lewis. In Norse times the island was divided between the two sons of the chief Leod and the mountains were the dividing line. Leod was the progenitor of the Macleods who owned these lands until the 1830's.
The circuit of South Harris is 45 miles and the west coast is spectacular with coves and beaches all the way. We stopped at the southern most point to look at St Clement's church built in the 16th century as the burial place of the Macleods.
Returning up the east coast know as the Bays is also amazing for its contrast. It is like a rocky moonscape yet croft townships exist here as they were expelled from the west during the clearances so that the land could be used for sheep!
Too hot to sit in the car waiting for our ferry at Tarbert but as we sailed towards Skye the clouds appeared and it was raining as we landed. We are staying in Dunvegan, interestingly also the seat of the Macleod clan on Skye. The southern part of Skye is Macdonald. I know this as it is where my son in laws forebears come from!
Not a good forecast for tomorrow but hey I don't think we can complain!
The extra is for Rose at Horgavost on the west coast.
