It's a good thing I was recording the match because I turned the television on  a few minutes late.  I looked up in the corner of the screen and my jaw dropped.  The U.S. had already scored two goals?  I HAD to go back and begin this match from the beginning. 

Megan Rapinoe sent a great corner kick into the box, which Carli Lloyd sent flying past the Japanese goal keeper in the third minute, the fastest goal in WWC final history.  Two minutes later, Lloyd scored the second of her three goals, the first ever hat trick scored by a player in a Women's WC final.  The winner was actually scored in the 14th minute by Lauren Holiday. 

The five goals was the most by any team in a WWC final.  No other team has scored more than two.

The U.S. WNT finished this year's tournament with a 34-4-5 all-time in Women's World Cup play, outscoring its opponents 112-35 in 43 games.  The 34 wins, 112 goals scored and the 43 games played are FIFA Women's World Cup records.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo won her second Golden Glove Award (2011) and Lloyd was presented with the Golden Ball as the best player in the tourney.
