Essex Longhorn

What a magnificent beetle the spotted or flower longhorn is! I photographed this specimen on hogweed flowers this morning. The larvae of these beetles live on dead wood and can cause damage to timber. Their slightly wasp-like appearance can give protection from birds. Their colouring and patterns can be quite variable.
