Treasure and Trash
Blazing British sunshine at its best - super warm and sunny, around 28ºC I'm guessing. I spent most of the day with bro clearing out Dad's garage. As a young lad, Dad was a sea scout and knots really were this speciality. Every box and tin was tied in ways that would make lovers of the rubrics cube salivate. Inside all kinds of "might come in handy" things - a life time of nails, pins, rope, odds and ends, unidentifiable small metal objects, curtain hooks from the house we grew up in, wrenches and spanners - well, many and various tools - the fixing, carpentry and gardening kind - some clearly pre-war and presumably inherited. All in all, an Aladdins cave of treasures and trash - some of which we kept, for various reasons. My favourite tin was this Huntley & Palmers large biscuit tin, about 12 inches square, carefully sealed with old rope in a knot that kept me occupied for minutes, and filled with a couple of hundred nails. We think it must be about 100 years old, as my brother tells me that it originally belonged to our Grandfather. We've kept the tin. And the nails. Love you Dad.
After such a day we decided that we needed sustenance as only the Fox and Raven can provide, joined by a friend, it was so warm this evening that we sat in the garden overlooking the meads that I pictured so many times. The tranquility of watching the horses and a narrow boat sliding down the river was a peaceful end to this sometimes difficult day.
