Maruia Falls
This waterfall is the result happening from the 1929 Murchison Earthquake, where there were 17 people killed in various slips around the district.
When the slip came down, it blocked the Maruia River, thus causing it to cut a new river course, it wended its way, found some soft rock and thus eroded to become what it is now. There is a huge hole under the face of the falls, said to be over 35 feet deep below the surface. The trees above the falls on the left of the photo are regrowth over the earthquake slip.
There is a barrier for people to remain behind when viewing the falls, but some people disregard the warning signs and still go out on the rock face which is extremely dangerous. There have been some deaths here, when people slip off, the force of the water is such that they are suctioned back onto the face of the rock under the surface and not able to get out at all
I forgot to change my camera lens before I went out there to take my blip so will use a different lens next time.
