Cloisters, Salisbury Cathedral

Spent today in Salisbury and took lots of photos, mainly the sort you'd find on a picture postcard.

The main reason for visiting Salisbury was to be at the opening of a friend's art exhibition at the Fishertonmill Gallery. The theme of the exhibition is wood and there are some interesting sculptures and furniture there, but John's pictures are quite distinctive, here's one example called Forest Fire. I especially like the picture he's done for the Jubilee, called Jubilate, it reminds me of Miro and is great fun.

Inside the Cathedral there was a rehearsal going on for a concert in the evening so we got to hear Tallis' Spem in alium and Striggio's Ecce beatam lucem. They'd described the Tallis as "soaring, uplifting, remarkable, truly monumental" - couldn't put it better myself - and the performance was really powerful. Great music, fab performance and acoustics that were absolutely superb - it must've been an amazing concert.

There's lots to love about Salisbury Cathedral with plenty of green space surrounding it so you can really appreciate its early gothic structure but I especially loved the 13th century arcaded cloister, it is the largest in England and the trees in its central garden are beautiful.

And I nearly forgot the Magna Carta: impressive early attempt at a Bill of Rights, good to see it!
