olympic view

...the forecast was for a breezy but dry day with plenty of morning sunshine so, straight after breakfast, we set off for the viewpoint on Povington Hill and walked along the ridge to the iron age hill fort of Flower's Barrow.

Today's blip is the view from the fort looking across the lovely shape of Bindon Hill and Weymouth Bay to Portland. The inviting looking promontory of rocks is Mupe Rocks and Mupe Ledges. Out of view but not far behind is Lulworth Cove. I had a real job choosing today's image as there were several contenders. I finally chose this one because it includes a distant vista of where the Olympic sailing medals will be fought out, viewed from where an iron age existence was fought out, standing within an area where mock battles are fought out.

The path down from Flower's Barrow to Worbarrow Bay is wickedly steep - it is for this reason that we do the walk in this direction. At the east end of the bay is the rather splendid little peninsular of Worbarrow Tout, with its picturesque view along the coast past Kimmeridge Bay to St Aldhelm's Head.

From here, we took the track inland to the ghost village of Tyneham, which was half-inched by the War Office in 1943 displacing the inhabitants of, not only the village, but the surrounding rural community, too. There is a fascinating account of Tyneham's history here...
