Winston Gate Bridge

We arrived safely in N. Yorkshire at tea time and are staying just over the border in Co.Durham at a delightful caravan site just outside Calder surrounded by a panorama of stunning views and countryside as far as the eye can see.

We took a walk down the road and saw the Winston Bridge where the famous Ray Hannah, founder of the Red Arrows, amongst many other things, flew a Spitfire under this bridge in a Battle of Britain film 'A piece of cake'. Squadron Leader Raynham George Hanna AFC (with bar) (28 August 1928 – 1 December 2005) was a New Zealand-born pilot in the Royal Air Force and a number of civilian companies. During his time in the RAF, he was a founding member of the Red Arrows. He also founded the Old Flying Machine Company and regularly flew aircraft from his vintage warbird collection at airshows around the world..

Our walk beside the River Tees was glorious and we finished up with a pint of the local brew in the The Brownlow Arms pub in Calder.

An early(ish) night is called for before the rest of our journey tomorrow which is a shorter hop up to Northumberland.
