COATES BRIDGE

COATES BRIDGE . . . is on the backroads of the Pocklington Canal in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

This shot is looking at Coates Lock – the fifth lock of nine, on the journey from Canal Head, Pocklington to the River Derwent.

The canal, which is 9.5 miles long, was mainly used to carry coal and agricultural produce and the last commercial craft to use the canal was the keel boat Ebenezer, in 1932. Today there is partial navigation thanks to a local preservation society.
