The Turbines
It's my dads 83rd birthday tomorrow. He was an officer in The Royal Navy and is very fond of his navy days. One thing that he likes that keeps him in touch with those times (he met my mum who was in The WRENS) was his daily ration of Navy Rum. The authentic ration is Pussers Rum - no other make even if it says Navy on it.
It's not easy buying a bottle. The Navy museum in Monmouth sell it. I remember seeing a bottle in the window of an off-licence in Newport so drove there to buy a bottle. At almost £30 it isn't cheap so it makes a great gift for the man who has everything.
The name Pusser has long been used by sailors as a slang term for Royal Navy Rum and is a corruption of Purser who issued the daily ration. It is made in Tortola in The British Virgin Islands in The Caribbean. It continues to be made by Charles Tobias under licence from The Admiralty and for each case made a $2 donation is made to the Admiralty fund which now totals £1 million since 1980.
I have been to the factory in Tortola and bought some bottles under £9 each. Quite a saving on the price in the UK!
After dropping his present and card off, I had a drive through the countryside on the way home and rather liked the country lane leading over Penylan Hill towards Bassaleg village, Newport. the lines from the crops and the windturbines grabbed my attention.
I quite like windturbines and watching them spinning round.
