Challenging the Waves

Dear Diary,

I walked along the beach at Madaket on Nantucket's southern shore.  The waves were quite high and the water still on the cold side.  I wasn't venturing in but these young girls darted back and forth challenging the waves and then racing back to safety.  Their fathers stood guard a few feet away so they felt secure in their defiance.

We all find ourselves faced with challenges from time to time.  We test the limits of our courage and personal strength.  Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don't but it is part of the human experience to test the outer limits of our nature.

I am back in Boston now and will head back to Maine in a couple of hours...back to reality.  I saw an old photo of Nantucket yesterday with a sign pointing to the harbor.  It said, "To America".  It did feel a bit like I had been in a faraway place and it felt wonderful.  On the side of a building on Main Street is a sign that shows just how far Nantucket is from "the world".  I've added it as my extra photo.
