As internet newspapers didn't exist for most of the time when I was being taught maths in secondary school it would have been tricky for the teachers to have proposed retaining the ability to solve school-level maths problems presented in internet newspapers twenty-odd years later as one of the things for which techniques such as probabilities and equation-rebalancing would eventually come in handy.
