We surprised Alex tonight with a visit to the "Berry Dairy Days" in Burlington after a co-worker told Isaac about it.  We took Alex to dinner (which he thought was boring) and told him we had a surprise for him later.  When we pulled up to the soccer fields, we told Alex we were just planning on throwing the football (which we did for over a half hour).  The band was playing, kids were running around everywhere (including my own) and it was a comfortable evening.  Seemed perfect to us, and it satisfied Alex's desire to know what the surprise was.  At dusk, the fireworks show started, which was our real surprise to Alex.  He was blown away with excitement.  Great show!  Mission accomplished.
