New Dutch Herring
Today is the day that the 'Hollandse Nieuwe' (New Dutch Herring or Soused Herring) may officially be sold. It should have been wednesday last week, but the herring was not 'fat' enough so it was delayed till today.
Despite that the traditional 'Flag Day' festivities were not postponed last saturday, but had to serve herring from last year :-(
Eating the new fresh RAW herring is a typical Dutch tradition and is traditionally eaten by lifting the herring by its tail and eat it upwards holding it over your mouth and sliding it into the open mouth, as kindly demonstrated in my photo today.
Another nice tradition is the auction of the first barrel in the Scheveningen Harbor benefitting a 'Do Good' cause.
Yesterday this first barrel was sold for 53.000,- euros (the record auction was 95.000,- euros in 2012)
Press large if you want to take a bite,....
come on.... after all Japanese Sushi is raw fish too ;-))
