She became a rose.... June Challenge

June Challenge June 8th Dusk.

Two Magicians by Steeleye Span

Blacksmith or Smith is the generic word for those who work with metal, and in particular forged (heated) iron.

In the past many would have forged horse shoes as well as repairing machinery and creating wrought iron work. Today, the professions have been divided, with those shoeing horses being known as farriers, and metal work being done by blacksmiths.

Farriers wear a leather apron with a split up it so the horse's leg can be held between their own legs while they trim the hoof and then shape the iron shoe to fit. 7 nails are used to hold the shoe on each hoof, the nail entering the outer layer of the horse's foot which equates to our finger nail, and having no nerves, it causes no pain to the horse.

The end of the nail protrudes from the wall of the hoof and is then turned over by the farrier and rasped flat against the hoof wall, keeping the shoe tightly attached. As the horse's hoof grows the process has to be repeated every four to six weeks.

It is immensely pleasurable to see a farrier at work.

To watch a skilful and timeless craft carried out by, an invariably, fit young man, combined with the smell of sweat, melding with the burning coals on the forge and the horse's hooves....
For many it proves a potent combination. ...

I had hoped to post a shot of a Husky, Dusky, coal blacksmith, for today's challenge of Dusk.

Sadly my plan didn't come to fruition, so instead you get a visual reference to this verse from one of my favourite folk songs recorded here by Steeleye Span, titled 'Two Magicians'

She became a rose, a rose all in the wood, and he became a bumble bee and kissed her where she stood.

Here are the words in their entirety and the link so you can listen while you read.

Two Magicians

She looked out of the window as white as any milk,
And he looked in at the window as black as any silk.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, you coal blacksmith,
You have done me no harm,
You never shall have me maidenhead that I have kept so long.

I'd rather die a maid, ah but then she said,
Aand be buried all in me grave,
Than to have such a nasty husky dusky fusky musky coal blacksmith,
A maiden I will die.

She became a duck, a duck all on the stream,
And he became a water dog and fetched her back again.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, you coal blacksmith. Etc.

She became a star, a star all in the night,
And he became a thunder cloud and muffled her out of sight.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, you coal blacksmith. Etc.

She became a rose, a rose all in the wood
And he became a bumble bee and kissed her where she stood.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, you coal blacksmith. Etc.

She became a nun, a nun all dressed in white,
And he became a canting priest and prayed for her by night.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, you coal blacksmith. Etc.

She became a trout, a trout all in the brook,
And he became a feathered fly and catched her with his hook.

Hello, hello, hello, hello, you coal blacksmith. Etc.

She became a corpse, a corpse all in the ground,
And he became the cold clay and smothered her all around.
