Mechan's Grave

This engraved rock sits by the main road, almost exactly across Loch Riddon from my house.

Although I have lived here for 23 years I have never stopped at it until today which I did on my way , yet again, to the GP in Tighnabruaich.

It is reputed to mark the last resting place of a Viking Chief who died hereabouts during a skirmish around the time of the Battle of Largs in 1263 though clearly the stone was engraved much later than that.

I have not been able as yet to find out when the engraving was done and by whom.
