Sunday morning

S went sailing today, so I dropped him off in La Nautique and went for a stroll around the market in Narbonne. As you can see, it was a lovely day and as always on a Sunday, both indoor and outdoor markets were heaving with people shopping for their lunch, or drinking aperos in preparation for it.  I chose this photo because it shows the bustle, and I like the way that faces from the  past are looking down on the colourful modern crowd.

Narbonne's covered market is over a century old and one of the best in southern France in my opinion. It has changed quite a bit over the last few years, with more cafes and a number of stalls serving tapas and wine, but its essential qualities for daily shopping still remain -- a fantastic fish section, many butchers, traiteurs, fruit and veg stalls, bakeries, florists, stalls dedicated to olives ... see extras. Oh, and cheese stalls of course. Outside, on Sundays and Thursdays, almost the entire length of the Barques is covered with stalls selling clothes, shoes, bags, toys, fabrics, jewellery, porcelain, pots and pans, haberdashery -- enough to keep a dedicated shopper busy all morning.
