'Mireille'
Each province in France has its own costume. Alsace & Brittany costumes are well-known. Provence has a few of its own. But the Arlésienne costume is very famous. Alphonse Daudet, a short-story writer wrote a story called 'L'Arlésienne'. It inspired the composer Georges Bizet.
But most people ignore that the Arlésienne costume was worn on festive occasions. In daily life, women wore a more comfortable costume known as Mireille.
The village of Maussane, near Arles, had a traditional celebration today. This lady is wearing the costume of Mireille. Charles Gounod composed an opera with this name.
