Memorial day x 2
Today I took my Oak sapling to Saxon Hall, the former home of the Special Air Service (SAS). The Oak will be used to replace a 200 year old Oak tree that was killed when the site was being redeveloped and builders cut through the roots.
Commemorations today were for Herefordshire military personnel that had fallen in all wars, including the 'Forgotten Wars' such as Oman and the Radfan area.
The other was for Anne Frank, the courageous and tenacious young girl who used a diary, given to her by her Father on her 13th birthday, to keep notes of the time they were hiding from the Gestapo in Amsterdam.
They were informed upon and the whole family were sent to various concentration camps. Eventually Anne was sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she and her sister died of Typhus.
It was, as you might imagine, a very emotional day with a short Christian service, a couple of songs from the Hereford Academy choir followed by a Jewish commemoration service, some of which was in Hebrew.
Because of the time of year my tree is not going to be planted straight away. They are going to let me know when they have a planting ceremony during 'National Tree Planting Week' in November.
If you've got a sapling hanging around your local council might like to know about it :-)
