House of Sampoerna cigarette factory
We decide to explore a little today and take the bus to the famous hand-rolled cigarette factory, the House of Sampoerna. Its quite an amazing place with a big family history. You're not actually allowed to take pics but Fred didn't see the sign so got this one of the factory floor with all the workers rolling cigarettes by hand ... they are really quick and its quite a sight. They use cloves in the cigarettes and the whole place smells amazing.
After this we were going to go to China Town but give it a miss and get in an angkot to Kenjeren Park where we think we might be able to chill for a bit. Its a very strange place. We learn later its owned by an eccentric millionaire who has built odd temples, hotels, a riding school and a water park. It even has a beach and there is a sign saying whale sharks, although a local boat owner says there isn't any near here. There are kids around riding and going to the pool but hardly anyone else to be seen except lots of stallholders selling food although we're not sure who is buying.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any nice, green spaces so we head out again and end up taking a really long angkot journey back towards our guesthouse. We're travelling for well over an hour and see some grim areas of the city with open sewers and dilapidated housing. Its a good little city tour but we're glad when we finally reach the guesthouse.
We go to a local "reflexology" place and end up with a full body massage for about 3 quid which is pretty good then dinner of beer and pizza at the, slightly quieter tonight, mall.
