Weathervane

W is for Weathervane

This is the weathervane on top of St. Philip's cathedral in Birmingham. It was a really bad day for taking a camera out, being very wet indeed. I thought I might get another go on my way back from the concert we were going to see, but in fact the rain just got worse.

The Boars head on the weather vane comes from the Gough coat of arms. When the cathedral needed more money to finish its tower, a gentleman called Sir Richard Gough persuaded King George 1st to donate £600. So Sir Richard was remembered with this fine guided weather vane.

If you want to know more about what makes a good weathervane look on our Weather for Schools website. It even has a picture of this weather vane taken on a sunny day! You can find out all about measuring the weather on this website.
