The Khukuri

Roz is in Edinburgh this week so we met up with Ann & Baxter for our usual few beers around town, taking Roz on a wee pub crawl to a couple bars she hadn't been to before, including The Standing Order, The Alexander Graham Bell and The Haymarket. I know a couple of these are Wetherspoons but they are worth visiting, the Standing Order looks quite impressive inside (it used to be a bank) and they have a decent  range of beers at reasonable prices. If you visit them during the day when there's no big sporting events on they can be quite nice for a pint or two and cheap food. The Haymarket is a Nicholson's bar and does have a good range of beers and decent food.

We did not, however, eat at those bars as we went to "The Khukuri" which is a Nepalese Restuarant, it was really good. They have a wide ranging menu including Nepalese dishes as well as the more traditional dishes you'll see in an Indian restaurant. So today's Blip is an image of the interior and I've added a couple extra photos of the food, including my starter "DRJ" (Dolakha Raja Jhinga) - which was "King Prawns cooked with fresh garlic, lemon, tomato, coriander and spices and served with a small chapatii". I do like prawns in garlic and this was a delicious dish with just the right amount of spices. For the main coarse I had "Piroo Piroo" which is a famous dish from Kathmandu with ginger, garlic, spring onion, coriander, green fenugreek and other Nepali spices (imbu, jimbu, timbur) - pictured on the right in the second extra photo (the dish on the left was Ann's main coarse, I can't remember exactly what she ordered). I also had a stuffed paratha and rice on the side.

We all agreed the food was excellent and the service was lovely and friendly, definitely worth a return visit.

After our meal we visited "Usquabae" which is a new Whisky bar in the West End (it used to be Ryan's Cellar Bar but is now a separate establishment), As well as an impressive selection Whisky (ranging from £4.00 to £200.00 a glass) they also had a decent range of beers on tap. It is nice comfortable booths which we enjoyed as we digested our and a couple more drinks, while chatting before taking our separate buses home.

All in all a lovely day...
