Periwinkle flames

I've been reading Jhumpa Lahiri and came across a lovely line in her short story, Mrs. Sen's, today: "Brimming bowls and colanders lined the countertop, spices and pastes were measured and blended, and eventually a collection of broths simmered over periwinkle flames on the stove." I loved the imagery here, especially of the periwinkle flames. I grabbed my camera and played around in the kitchen with our burners.
